Fantastischer Wind im Winter auf der Chesapeak Bay nahe Washington D.C. - häufig in Sturmstärke. Die Ballad ist hierfür ein hervorragendes Schiff. Mit einem holzverbrennenden Ofen (einem Dickinson Newport - hält Joseph die Innentemperatur bei ca. 27°C und unternimmt in der Winterzeit Törns mit ganz eigenem Reiz.

Das Gewässer um seinen Liegeplatz ist meist eisfrei, denn ein Kraftwerk erwärmt das Flusswasser. Sammelt sich Eis an, so wird es durch den Wellengang zerbrochen. Allerdings ist Joseph während des Ankerns über Nacht in einer kleinen Bucht einmal eingefroren...aber die Ballad ist ebenfalls ein hervorragender Eisbrecher.

The wind is fantastic in the winter -- often gale force. The Ballad is a great gale boat. In terms of heat, I have a woodburning heater -- a Dickinson Newport. It keeps the boat a toasty 80F. Ice is rarely much of a problem. My marina is situated is in a creek that receives the outflow of a power plant, so the water almost never freezes. I have easy access to the bigger water of the bay. There is hardly ever any serious ice out there; it's broken up by wave action and ends up mostly as slush. The worst ice I've encountered is after spending the night at anchor in a beautiful little cove and finding myself frozen in the following morning! But the Ballad makes a great ice-breaker.
